Customer Safety

Preparing For Your Shop

Before shopping, ask yourself:

  • Have I returned from international travel within the past 14 days?
  • Am I experiencing cold, flu or COVID-19-like symptoms (including: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing, stuffy or runny nose, loss of smell, headache, muscle aches, fatigue or loss of appetite)?
  • Do I provide care or have close contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19?

If the answer to any of these are “yes,” we ask that you do not come to the store, and if you do, you will be refused entry.  We encourage you to use our Home Shopping Services for delivery until it is safe for you emerge from self-isoaltion.

We also ask that you:

  • Where possible, shop alone.
  • Prepare a shopping list to shop effectively and quickly
  • Wash your hands

Entering SuperValu

Please enter the store through our main entrance.  Please take the time to read notifications and posts from the local health authorities, as well as any other important store news or safety updates.

Please use the hand sanitizer provided at the front of the store, prior to your shop.

During busier times:

  • We may reduce the capacity of customers in the store to approximately 40. There is a socially-distanced marked line system outside the store, located inside the mall, to ensure everyone is comfortable.
  • We may have a staff member at the entrance of the store to monitor traffic, crowd control, and sanitize handles on carts and buggies.

While In SuperValu

To ensure and protect all of our staff and customers, please ensure everyone maintains proper social distancing, which is 2 meters, or 6 feet, away from each other.  This is about the length of 2 double-tier shopping buggies, or 1 regular buggy.  Where possible, please wait beside other customers in an aisle, and keep moving to ensure there is enough space for everyone.

Please only touch what you plan on buying.

While Checking Out

  • Please continue to observe social distancing. We have placed distance markers and line indicators on the floor at each check out.
  • You are asked to load your own groceries and proceed to the end of the till.
  • Use contactless payment options (ie tapping your credit/debit card) where possible.
  • If using cash, place your money on the counter to avoid contact.
  • During busier times, we will open more additional tills to reduce and spread out lines.
  • Although safety shields have been installed at each till, we ask that you continue to maintain social distance from staff and other customers.
  • Please return your basket or buggy to the corral or entrance attendant.

Reusable Bags

We make available free use of plastic bags.  If you choose to use your own reusable bags (including backpacks, reusable shopping bags, cloth bags, totes and boxes), for the safety of our staff, we will not touch or handle them in the store.

  • Customers using a reusable bag will be asked to pack the bags themselves.
  • The reusable bag may not be placed on the checkout at any point.
  • Reusable bags must be clean and used for the purpose of taking your groceries home.
  • Backpacks must be worn by the customer at all times and must not be placed on any part of the checkout.

Employee Protocols

Employees are responsible for contributing to the health and safety, and are expected to perform work in a safe manner, including reporting in a condition that is safe to work.  We ask all employees to complete a self-assessment prior to beginning to work by responding “yes” or “no” to the following statements:

  • I have returned from international travel within the past 14 days;
  • I am experiencing cold, flu or COVID-19-like symptoms (including: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing, stuffy or runny nose, loss of smell, headache, muscle aches, fatigue or loss of appetite);
  • I provide care or have close contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19.

If the employee has responded “yes” to any of the above statements, they are expected to return home immediately and self-isolate in accordance with guidance from the BC CDC.

Starting a shift acts as a confirmation that the employee has read, understands and acknowledges that they are not displaying any symptoms and meet the safety requirements needed to be at work.

Store, Assistant, Department Managers and Shift Supervisors are expected to have regular touchpoints with employees to observe and investigate any symptoms that may be related to illness.  We may periodically audit, where a manager will screen all employees on shift using the above screening questions.

While at the store, all staff are encouraged to wash hands every 30-minutes, or use hand sanitizer provided throughout the store.  Although gloves are not a replacement for frequent hand washing and sanitization, gloves are available to all staff members if they wish to use.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

As an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic and as part of SuperValu’s role in keeping our customers and staff members healthy and safe, routine cleaning and disinfecting is of great importance.  We continue to monitor events closely, following all government advisories and adopting new procedures as needed to keep SuperValu safe.

Frequency of Cleaning

Cleaning and disinfecting of all high contact areas is required at least once-per-hour during business hours, and once-every-30-minutes during busier times.

High contact areas of the store to be cleaned include:

  • All door handles, including all cooler, freezer and swing doors
  • Deli and bakery surfaces, including the service counter and prep areas
